Unveiling of the new artworks

December 17, 2015 | Source: Etienne Saint-Amant

Today, I have the pleasure to reveal four of my new creations.

Idéaux ressentis

During our life, our ideals are constantly changing and evolving. Through our sorrows, our mourning, our failures, our beliefs, our ambitions, our professions, our leisure, our successes and our loves, they are constantly changing ... shaken. The work Idéaux ressentis has a complex and vivid expression of this evolution, woven in a fragmented and powerful aesthetics..

Technical note: this is the first time I use the Levenshtein distance in some coloring elements of an artwork. That distance, especially used in science to compare DNA chains, allows me to compare numbers as if they were text strings and we now discover the artistic and conceptual potential behind this idea. A big thank to Kerry Mitchell for his important contribution and cooperation in this regard. I'll surely explore other possibilities of its use in the future.

An diesem Tag hielt ich es

In An diesem Tag hielt ich es, I wanted to express this feeling of elation and accomplishment when we are literally a part of a landscape that is both powerful and simple. The play of color and that flash are very evocative of a particular moment. Extremely rare, I designed this work for a smaller format.

Overview

This is not the Earth but a fictional planet or moon. In Overview, I want to express that very special feeling that astronauts have admiring our planet from space. This evocative definition is taken from Wikipedia:

The overview effect is a cognitive shift in awareness reported by some astronauts and cosmonauts during spaceflight, often while viewing the Earth from orbit or from the lunar surface.

It refers to the experience of seeing firsthand the reality of the Earth in space, which is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, "hanging in the void", shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere. From space, national boundaries vanish, the conflicts that divide people become less important, and the need to create a planetary society with the united will to protect this "pale blue dot" becomes both obvious and imperative.

Integration of Art to Architecture at Camso

September 10, 2015

Etienne Saint-Amant received the privilege to participate in an integration of art to architecture for the new global operations center of Camso company. Here are the artistic statement around the artwork Playgrounds and some photographs. In the building, the artwork comes in several artistic variations such as an integration on glass over 9 by 53 feet. He warmly thanks Camso and architectural firm ADSP.

This work of art was designed to project the nature and soul of Camso while integrating with the inspiring architecture of the global operations center. The abstract conception of the work suggests many elements while promoting a bold aesthetic. Thus, the colors refer to as water, sky, sun, snow and forest, and also, at the mud, sand, concrete, earth and stone. The semicircular central form suggests the iconic track and the tire. The bottom of the work offers a minimalist version of mountains: mythical lands of conquest. The angularity of lines evokes the depth and architectural space. Filigree structures are reminiscent of technical drawing, engineering and technology behind the products, which are intended to act on many different playgrounds.

CNRS/RATP Giant Fresco at Paris-Montparnasse Station

Collaboration with Etienne Saint-Amant

September 10, 2015 | Source : Presse CNRS

Etienne Saint-Amant was fortunate to see his artistic to see his artistic and scientific work be integrated with the fresco The Corridor of Time at station Paris-Montparnasse. A project established by the National Research Scientific Centre (CNRS) in France.

The Corridor of Time

How a space, a good or a practice can turn into object of cultural or natural heritage worthy of preservation and restoration? CNRS and the RATP respond to this question by image, with a fresco of 134 meters installed in the corridor of the metro station Montparnasse-Bienvenüe in Paris.

This exhibition invites, from September 9th and for two months, users of the RATP and the curious to discover the role of mathematics, chemistry, biology or computer science in the patrimonial process.

To extend this event, the CNRS also offers an interactive version and enriched this exceptional document.

In September and October 2015, the CNRS, in partnership with the RATP, will exhibit in the hall of Montparnasse, a fresco of 134 meters long on the theme of heritage, The Corridor of Time. As images, the public will discover the process of heritage value through the scientific progress of several objects. These steps illustrate the discovery of the object, the certification of the origin of the object, the knowledge of the subject, the celebration of the object from its exposure and the transmission of the object to future generations. A sixth step echoing the theme of the 32nd edition of the European Heritage Days will ask the public about the heritage of tomorrow and the contribution of science in this field. The fresco can be read in both direction and allows to conclude or begin with the path of the object.

For more information on the CNRS and the European Heritage Days 2015, we invited you to consult the press release (in french) on the CNRS website.

NEW SOLO EXHIBITION: CONNECTIVITÉ

August 21, 2014

From August 30 to October 5 will be held the solo exhibition CONNECTIVITÉ highlightning recent works by the artist Étienne Saint-Amant. All interactions and events that we live have a footprint somewhere in our body; our brain develops and modifies its internal structure constantly in function of those influences. In a way, our life is found encrypted in our connectome (the extremely complex network of neuronal connections). This exhibition presents the beauty of the mind-body junction in terms of the connection of our cells through an aesthetic and scientific approach, using the latest in technology of diffusion nuclear magnetic resonance.

Vernissage : Sunday, the 7th of September, 2:00 PM
Maison des arts et de la culture de Brompton, 1 Wilfrid-Laurier, Sherbrooke

Connectivity Exhibition

CONNECTIVITÉ exhibition differs because the images were develeped from MRI taken under medical clinical research. Following numerous scientific and aesthetic manipulations, these representations of the brain appear in new forms. The high quality of the artworks offers a remarkable view of the complexity of neuronal connections preserved in the composition. The inspiration for this project came from the work Selfportrait II, winner of the title Best Human Connectome Representation (OHBM 2013 Seattle), conducted using data from the actual structure of the brain of the artist. With the help of his colleagues at Sherbrooke Connectivity Imaging Laboratory (SCIL), they produced a tractogram of the white matter to produce a high resolution image. This image was also artistically modified.

- Thanks -

The artist wishes to thank Arnaud Boré, Gabriel Girard, Jean-Christophe Houde, Vanessa Chenel, Jean-René Bélanger d’Imeka and the Sherbrooke Connectivity Imaging Laboratory led by Maxime Descoteaux for their valuable contributions to this project.

La tyrannie des droits by Brewster Kneed

April 28, 2014

The artwork Objurgations is on the cover of the book La tyrannie des droits by Brewster Kneed. It is published by Écosociété.

" Though math and art may seem like complete opposites, for some artists, mathematics actually provides a rich vein of ideas for an artist to tap. And, conversely, exploring those ideas artistically can offer new insights into the mathematics involved.
