My big invitation

May 6, 2021 | Sources: Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke and Etienne Saint-Amant

It is with great emotion and pride that I invite you to my exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke. It is indeed a teenager's dream that is becoming reality at this very moment! After twenty years of work and contributions to art and science, I now see the consecration of my efforts endorsed by this magnificent institution! As you can imagine, we have some nice surprises in store for you...

Etienne Saint-Amant - Natural Geometries
At the border of art and science

The approach of artist Etienne Saint-Amant is unique and fascinating. He explores the forms and colors of nature from mathematical formulas, which are materials and pigments to his creations.

The exhibition Natural Geometries is currently being mounted and presents 23 works, including several monumental ones, from his recent production. The corpus includes unveiled works inspired by the region as well as an immersive installation. Children and adults alike will be dazzled by the originality of this Eastern Townships artist's approach.

The exhibition is presented from May 13 to September 5, 2021. Due to the current situation, there will be no traditional opening. However, the artist will be present at the Museum a few times during the exhibition. A closing event is planned. Stay tuned for more information.

Address:
241, rue Dufferin

Resupply of artworks for the store

May 6, 2021 | Source: Etienne Saint-Amant

My no-life year, 2020, was actually my most active and prolific year of my career. It went by at an insane speed, drowned in my artistic obsessions. I produced many, many works to the point of overwhelming my production studios with contracts. I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for delivering the goods and for continuing to do so at the ambitious pace I "impose" on them. I've been away from my friends and family quite a bit and I haven't been very active on social media. I have to say that I have a lot of projects that I can't wait to share with you but I have to take it one step at a time.

As I firmly believe that art is an engine of wealth creation (as much cultural, as patrimonial, as monetary) and I am a fervent promoter that the acquisition (should I say the adoption!) of a work must represent a win-win situation. Now, I am proud to say that 100% of my sales history of works of art are of value to my collectors. All of it for the past 20 years, I think that's great! But nothing can be taken for granted. It is thanks to you that my artistic process can continue and evolve. I am also committed to continue to offer new works at democratic prices because access to art should not be only for the better off. I have also done my best to pursue a stable and moderate growth. I take pride in the fact that my exhibitions are low cost or free. For those of you who have never seen my work in real life, I can assure you that it is much more beautiful in real life than on your screens.

Today, I have two announcements to make. The first one is that I have just added a lot of works to my online collections. And I warmly invite you to browse the store. The second announcement is that I now accept ethereum and bitcoin for the purchase of my works.

Boutique en ligne

Why crypto? I wrote a long text on this subject analyzing and nuancing all aspects of this technology. The disadvantages and advantages. In short, at first, I was against it. Even strongly against it. Energy intensive, noisy, used by crime, the initial promise of decentralizing the monetary system was broken by cryptocurrency factories that recentralized much of the currency in the hands of the owners of powerful mining equipment. Moreover, as a big consumer of computing power for my work, I see this power being squandered at the expense of science and art. At the moment, I am still very disgusted by this and the worldwide shortage of semiconductors is directly affecting me. With the dazzling advances of the last few years, the picture of the disadvantages and advantages has changed radically to a more neutral position. I see humanism embedded in the design of future versions of currencies. You will understand that there must be something sublime in the picture for my opinion to be changed and I will come back to these reasons. I already see a more mature and reassuring future for this technology. And I see marked and continuous efforts to correct the drawbacks.

Currently, the most appreciated way to support me is to continue to share my work, my process and to come to the Museum. Please feel free to write me your comments and your opinion. I will read you. I promise!

Syncrétisme

November 18, 2020 | Sources: Etienne Saint-Amant and Michelle Boulay

Syncrétisme is a collective work of art ignited from the collaboration of two Eastern Township artists, Etienne Saint-Amant and Michelle Boulay. At the onset, a first encounter of both creators enjoying the warmth of a coffee, then followed a light-hearted walk on to forestry, winter trails. From these reflective and contemplative talks subsequently arose the desire to initiate partnering artistry, and give birth to an imagery that clothe poetic spirits. Many months passed until these artists were finally enabled to coalesce their inspirational essence upon a final canvas, theirs.

SYNCRÉTISME (le poème)

written by Etienne Saint-Amant and Michelle Boulay

Syncrétisme represents broken social mores and customs, while these are flooded and submerged by a tide of hope and its iridescent shawls of obscurity. It is the perpetual cycle of existence, contested between processes of life-death, and a renewal of life. It is the foundation of new global foresight and perception, steered toward an infinite recurrence including the Past, the Present, and the Future. It is the mystery that swims into our bones, swells in our marrow; the penultimate power of abyssal silence.

Automn'Art 2020

November 18, 2020 | Sources: Etienne Saint-Amant and Fondation Cégep de Sherbrooke

I have the great honor to be the ambassador of an extremely valuable event! Automn’Art from the Fondation Cégep de Sherbrooke. Artists and art collectors unite for the magnificent cause of college education! This year more than ever, we need you to support education by participating in the virtual art auction! I would like to thank all the future buyers (or bidders), all the artists and all the Foundation team for this wonderful initiative!

Automn'Art 2020

Here is the link for the auction : automnart2020.encanweb.ca.

The auction runs from the first second of November 19th until the evening of November 26th (look at the times!). It is full of beautiful artworks at crazy price for the best of cause!

Few people know this, but I began my artistic research during my college studies. I obtained my diploma in Computer Science from Cégep de Sherbrooke in 1998. Thanks to it, I was able to work in the field for several years and save enough money to enroll at the University and also complete my Natural Sciences courses at the college to be eligible for a bachelor's degree in the field I was interested in (imaging!). I then pursued my artistic and academic career in graduate school until I became a Master of Science. I consider my collegial diploma to be a cornerstone of my emancipation in life and I remember very clearly how pitifully frugal my life was during my college. This is why I consider the mission of the Fondation Cégep de Sherbrooke to be paramount: Help students to be educated so that they, and in turn, can be of service to society.

Sagacity: the dawn of the Dual series

A new exhibition presented at Marius-Barbeau Museum

July 7, 2020 | Sources: Etienne Saint-Amant, Éric Dupont, Marius-Barbeau Museum

We have worked very hard and pretty secretly during our confinement period to be able to offer this to you this summer! We have the great honor to invite you to our new exhibition presented at the Marius-Barbeau Museum. The exhibition has just started and, with the new rules, rather than an opening (vernissage), we offer you a meeting with us artists (with physical distancing) on July 19 at the museum.

Sagacity: the dawn of the Duale series

"In a context of weakening of biodiversity due to human activities, we have chosen a constructive approach. Instead of blaming or trying to be indignant to the population, we praise biodiversity by evoking life forms. We we do it in an æsthetic and romantic way. The objective that we covet, through this social and artistic action, is to anchor a deep awareness in the hearts of visitors. We want to somehow enlist the population in a duty (conscious or unconscious ) to protect biodiversity.

The pleasures of fishing in a sea full of fish, eating pollution-free snow and watching the cosmos in a dark sky disappear. The path of restoration can be gentle and pleasant for the soul of our civilization. Like the child who wants to help and protect an insect, we find this sensitivity in our adult hearts."

First supercomputed artwork

June 16, 2020 | Sources: Etienne Saint-Amant, Centre de Calcul Scientifique de l'Université de Sherbrooke, Thierry Gauthier

To celebrate my eighteen years of exhibition of my professional mathematical creations, I was able, in a pandemic context, to turn to a project that is very dear to me: the ultra precise animation of my works! The goal is to make them temporally alive. The problem is significant since they are extremely unstable chaotic systems such as, for example, the weather system.

It was in partnership with the Scientific Computing Center of the University of Sherbrooke that everything became possible. I thank them very much for their support and the acceptance of my eclectic technologies on their supercomputer

Centre de Calcul Scientifique de l'Université de Sherbrooke

So I was able to create a work with movements of great softness which is transformed in many ways towards a new artwork. Every place where you can put your eyes is in motion. The work is based on my work Ideaux impossibles and lasts 100 seconds before turning into its variation (which will also be produced as a large format work of art).

The music was created by Thierry Gauthier, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart, from the Music School of the University of Sherbrooke.

LA FORÊT PENSIVE

March 26, 2020 | Source: Etienne Saint-Amant

“ Nothing is beautiful, only man: on this piece of naivete rests all aesthetics, it is the first truth of aesthetics. Let us immediately add its second: nothing is ugly but degenerate man - the domain of aesthetic judgment is therewith defined. ”

Friedrich Nietzsche

In February 2020, we were working on the Great Barrier Reefs of Australia to inspire and document the biodiversity there. These unique, magical, comforting, even transcendent moments have allowed us to accumulate a current photographic corpus. Our duty to protect has only been strengthened. So here’s our first praise for this anemone-themed sea gem.
